As we move into the New Year there is always excitement about new goals & New Year resolutions but why do most people fail to stick to them?
In my personal and professional experience it comes down to motivation vs. dedication. Simply put, motivation is all the "feels" about some new goal; like losing 20lbs this year and getting back into a habit of exercising and eating healthy. It sounds awesome, you see the plan, and get excited about it. Which is very important... this motivation will help you get started, which can be a massive barrier for many people.
BUT and a big but typically that motivation dwindles and dedication will need to take over. Dedication is ACTING on your plan through thick and thin. Knowing and understanding that any goal that challenges you will push out of motivated thinking and into "the grind". Be ready to GRIND with everything you got!
3 Simple Steps to Help Stay Dedicated:
1) Write down your goal and plan, however simple. This should be somewhere you can see/review regularly.
ACCOUNTABILITY is so key when reaching for a new YOU. Share your journey and let your loved ones help you work for what you want to become!
Food is energy. We burn energy everyday, all day. But each activity will cause various levels of energy need. For example, working out will clearly cause more energy expenditure than sitting at your desk. The amount of food you eat should be appropriate to your GOALS & ACTIVITY LEVEL.
What is in food?
Below are the 3 levels I recommend folks to follow in order to build awareness and improve long-term habits!
Personally I have worked through all three phases a number of times over the last 6 years of building better eating habits. Like I've discussed in previous blogs this is a journey that will most likely ebb and flow based on where you are at in life! Enjoy it, take on what you can handle, and keep striving for a better, healthier YOU!
A food log like the one from my last blog, Nutritional Awareness, can give you a lot of insight into your health habits. This week I am going to discuss how to break the food log down and make some simple adjustments to start IMPROVING YOUR EATING HABITS.
Food Log Analysis after 1 Week
Action Plan for Week 2 Logging
After 1 week of food logging you are starting to see the picture of your health habits. The biggest step you can make is ANY STEP in a better direction. When it comes to improving health habits large dramatic changes are hard to sustain.
I believe the key to success in improving your eating habit is centered around small steps for change over a long period of time!
I would love to help anyone through this process... send me a message, or leave a comment and together we can change the course of your health and wellness!
When it comes to getting healthy and managing your weight a great first step is looking at your nutrition. Bring some AWARENESS to where you are at right now! Knowing your current habits allow for simple and attainable adjustments over the long haul. Long term commitment is ultimately a major factor in your success!
There are a number of wonderful diets out there that work wonders for people but the biggest issue I see is folks finding a system that they can stay with for the long term. I want to empower people to have life long habits that keep them healthy!
Over the next few weeks I'm going to go through a simple progression to help YOU improve your eating habits and relationship with food.
STEP #1: AWARENESS!!!
Like many things this will be a process of learning, exploring, and improving FROM WHERE YOU ARE TODAY!
CONSISTENTLY SHOW UP.
CONSISTENTLY DO YOUR BEST.
CONSISTENTLY HAVE A LEARNING MINDSET.
No matter what goal you are trying to achieve it most likely will require your consistent practice & attention. The concept of consistency is simple but the daily or weekly practice of this idea is where the challenge lies. In my opinion, the longer you can stay consistent through the good & the bad, the ups & the downs the greater chance you will have in succeeding. Sometimes, the success I'm referring to may not be what you set out for. For example, in my fitness journey I started out looking to discover my physical potential but as my consistent journey continues the more I am learning about who I am as a person deep down inside. As I continue to ride out my fitness journey it will continue to evolve and so will I.
My main focus as I continue going forward is to consistently SHOW UP to my commitments, always DO MY BEST, and go into each day with a LEARNING MINDSET!
